Eric Gill was one of the most important figures in British 20th Century art. He rediscovered the direct method of carving and used this to become not only the foremost lettercutter but also a sculptor of worldwide reputation. In addition to carving, Gill made over 1,000 engravings, mainly in wood, wrote over 300 books and pamphlets and was a major typographer. He founded a Catholic craft guild in Ditchling where he lived from 1906-24, moving to the Black Mountains between 1924-28 before settling at Pigotts in Buckinghamshire. The collection formed by Sir Christopher Bland is one of the most important in the country and includes sculpture, drawings, books and engravings. The collection will be supplemented by works from other sources which will be for sale.
